What Erofy Is, and How a Motion Model Differs From a Filter
Erofy is a model built to turn a still photograph into a short video. The phrase that matters in its description is «generative motion model», and it means something quite specific.
Filter versus model
An animation filter runs a pre-recorded script: it takes a face, lays a ready-made motion path over it and produces a result identical for any photograph. Hence the familiar artificiality — the same head turn, the same blink, the same rhythm in every clip in a row.
A generative model lays nothing over anything. It predicts how this person in this frame would have moved, working from the pose, the angle, the light and the expression. The movement is different every time because it is derived from the photograph rather than pulled from a library.
What that gives you in practice
- Features are preserved: the result stays the same person rather than an averaged portrait
- Movement agrees with the light in the scene — shadows shift correctly
- No recognisable «effect»: two clips from different stills do not resemble each other
- It handles unusual angles where a template simply would not fit
On the absence of templates and censorship
The makers stress that the model is not constrained by rigid templates when processing visual material. There is one practical consequence: responsibility for whose photograph gets uploaded rests entirely with the user. The absence of technical limits does not remove legal ones — processing images of real people without their consent remains an offence whatever tool was used.
What it needs as input
The requirements match any animation model: a sharp frame, clear light from one side, a face or figure of sufficient size, at least 900 pixels wide. Soft focus and heavy retouching do the most damage — they leave the model nothing to hold on to when tracking a surface.
