How Long a Clip Made From a Photograph Should Be
The question looks secondary until you meet accumulated error. Duration is not an output setting but a trade-off between spectacle and resemblance to the original.
Why longer is worse
Every subsequent frame is built with reference to those before it. A small divergence, invisible on the second frame, becomes a visible distortion by the two-hundredth: the shape of the nose has shifted slightly, the hairline has moved a little, the skin tone has drifted. This is dead reckoning error, and it is unavoidable.
The practical limit beyond which drift almost always shows is around ten seconds. Past that you either accept the divergence or cut and splice.
The loop
For a website or a product card what is usually wanted is not a clip with a beginning and an end but a seamless loop. It is made so that the last frame matches the first in pose, light and breathing phase. Then the repeat goes unnoticed and five seconds feel like continuous movement.
A loop is easier to get from restrained movement: the smaller the amplitude, the easier it is to join the ends. A sweeping head turn barely loops at all — the moment of return is always visible.
What is needed in practice
- A preview in a feed or a tile — three to five seconds, looped
- A portfolio demonstration — six to ten seconds
- Material for editing into something longer — short five-second passes, spliced separately
And on weight
Duration hits file size directly, and file size hits page speed. A five-second clip at sensible compression fits into 400–600 kilobytes. Fifteen seconds at the same quality is closer to two megabytes — on mobile data that is the difference between «it played» and «a spinner».
