Intimate Images Without Consent: Why It Is a Crime
The professional term is NCII — non-consensual intimate imagery. The category covers both genuine photographs distributed without permission and synthetic ones built from ordinary pictures.
Why this is not «just a picture»
The consequences for the victim do not differ from those of a real leak: lost employment, wrecked relationships, harassment, severe psychological harm. To bystanders the authenticity of an image is not obvious, and the explaining has to be done to each of them in turn. «But it isn't real» works neither practically nor legally.
The legal position
A growing number of countries impose direct liability for creating and distributing such material, synthetic included. The trend is common: manufacture, not only distribution, is becoming punishable. Platform anonymity offers no protection: requests to services and providers are a standard procedure.
Separately and most severely: any material involving minors, including entirely synthetic material. This is a grave criminal offence in every jurisdiction, without exception and without mitigation.
What a victim can do
- Record everything: screenshots, page addresses, date and time — before approaching anyone
- Send a removal demand to the platform: major services have dedicated forms and they work
- Go to law enforcement — an offence exists in most countries
- Use hash-blocking services: the image receives a fingerprint by which platforms block re-uploads
- Do not engage in correspondence with the distributor
For those who work with images
The practical rule is simple and requires no legal training: process only your own material, or material for which you hold written consent. Everything else is not a grey area but an offence with established liability.
