Composition in Nude Photography: Working With Line
A body gives the photographer something almost no other subject does — an unbroken line that can be led across the whole frame. Composition in this genre is usually built around it.
The leading line
Find the principal line — it usually runs from the shoulder through the curve of the torso to the hip — and build the frame so the eye travels along it from edge to edge. Everything else submits: light emphasises the line, the background does not argue with it, the crop does not sever it.
Diagonal against vertical
A vertical pose is static and often dull. Tilting the torso ten or fifteen degrees turns the vertical into a diagonal, and the frame immediately acquires movement. This is the cheapest available improvement: asking someone to lean slightly changes a picture more than changing lenses.
Cropping
The principal rule is never cut at a joint. A crop at the wrist, elbow, knee or ankle looks like an amputation: the eye reads a joint as a natural boundary and completes what is missing. Cut through the middle of a segment instead — across the forearm, the thigh, the calf.
Negative space
The emptiness around a figure is an active element. Tight framing gives tension and intimacy; open framing gives air and detachment. The beginner's error is leaving empty space by accident rather than as a decision.
Hands and feet
The most expressive and the most troublesome parts. A relaxed hand with naturally curved fingers reads as calm; a tense one with splayed fingers reads as anxious. Hands need watching separately — a model almost never remembers them.
