Local Models or Cloud Services: Which to Choose
The choice between «install it yourself» and «use a service» comes down to four parameters. There is no universal answer, but there are clear boundaries beyond which one option plainly wins.
Privacy
The main argument for a local installation. Material never leaves your computer: nobody stores it, indexes it or uses it for further training. For sensitive material this is decisive — service policies change, and an uploaded file cannot be recalled.
Cost
Locally: a one-off graphics card purchase plus electricity. Cloud: payment by volume. The break-even point depends on load — for occasional work a service is cheaper; for constant work a local setup pays for itself within months.
Quality
Here it is a draw, and for a reason: services usually run the same open models, just on more powerful hardware. The difference is speed, not outcome. The exception is closed models that cannot be downloaded, though their advantage narrows year by year.
Convenience
A convincing argument for the cloud. A local installation demands environment setup, updates, error hunting and an understanding of which model does what. That is several evenings at the start and regular maintenance afterwards.
A simple rule
- Sensitive material, regular work, a suitable graphics card — go local
- One-off tasks, ordinary material, no appetite for configuration — use a service
- A middle path is renting a remote machine: you configure it yourself and pay by the hour
