Why Faces Swim in Animated Photos, and How to Prevent It
«The face went swimmy» is the most common complaint about photo animation. The cause is almost always the source rather than the model, and in most cases it can be removed before processing even starts.
1. Soft focus
If the borders of the eyelids and lips are blurred, the model has nothing to grip. It has to decide afresh in every frame exactly where the contour runs — and decides slightly differently each time. Hence the fine tremor that reads as swimming.
2. Too much retouching
Skin polished to smoothness deprives the algorithm of landmarks. Pores, fine lines and small variations in tone are the coordinate system by which the model tracks a surface. Remove it and the surface starts sliding.
3. Hair across the face
Strands crossing a cheek or an eye are the hardest case. Hair is thin, semi-transparent and sits on the boundary between two different surfaces. As the head moves the model must decide what travels with it and what stays — and often decides wrongly.
4. Accessories
Glasses, earrings, chains and piercings obey a physics the model knows less well than facial anatomy. A spectacle frame may change shape slightly from frame to frame; a reflection in the lens may wander.
5. Too much amplitude
The stronger the requested movement, the larger the area that must be invented. Restrained movement almost always looks more expensive than sweeping movement — not out of modesty, but because less of it is made up.
What to do
Take a sharper frame, ease off the retouching, clear hair from the face at the shoot, remove glasses, reduce the amplitude. If the source is the only one and cannot be reshot, shorten the clip: over five seconds the divergence has no time to accumulate.
